Review; Panasonic KX-HN6012 Home Monitoring and Control Kit

Panasonic home monitoring and control kit, David Bowie

The Panasonic KX-HN6012 home monitoring and control kit (with additional external CCTV camera on the right).

With Christmas coming, many of us will have homes packed full of expensive gifts or planning a few days away visiting family. It’s a good time to review your home security.

One system worth considering comes from Panasonic. Hold on to your seat, it has quite a lengthy name; the Panasonic KX-HN6012 Home Monitoring and Control Kit.

In my experience, the product is more catchy than the name. Allow me to explain what the kit is, how it works and why it has impressed me.

The basic kit consists of several items;

  • A wireless hub that you configure with your WIFi and use to control the entire system
  • An indoor CCTV camera
  • A smart plug that can be programmed to turn on devices like bedside lamps at certain times and
  • Door sensors

To make it work, you download Panasonic’s Home Network app to your phone or wireless device. This gives you access to the wireless hub and the other items so you can monitor what is going on and change any settings. In other words, wherever you are in the world you can open the app and watch what is happening to your family home via the CCTV cameras or turn lights on and off etc.

Setting up
Although the system impressed me greatly, I can’t lie; setting it up was painful. I took me seven attempts to get it working.

In fairness, some of this was my fault. This system is set up to work on a 2G WiFi network. For the first couple of attempts I was erroneously trying to connect to a 5G network. Do keep this in mind and pay attention to what you are doing. Even when I had rectified this, it took five further attempts to get things up and running.

My one saving grace was that an old David Bowie concert was on the television while I was configuring everything. There is quite a bit of waiting around while lights flash and WiFi connections are made so the fact it took so long to set up meant I got to see more of the gig than I had planned to!

David Bowie helped me install this home monitoring kit. In a round about type of way.

For the purposes of this review, I tried out the indoor camera, smart plug and an outdoor camera. To clarify, the outdoor camera is not a part of the core package and must be purchased separately.

I didn’t test the door sensors simply because we have a cat who walks around the property regularly, not to mention two children who are in and out of rooms all the time. If we were ever going away for an extended period I may set them up but for day to day use, these would be unnecessary for this family.

Vast array of features
The system has a vast array of features. I simply can’t list them all here because I keep discovering new ones! Using the video camera you can; watch footage live, record footage, take still photographs, use it as a two way radio etc.

The video cameras will work in the dark. They have been set up so you can use them as a baby or child monitor. Believe it or not, they will even play lullabies!

Imagine taken at night time using the external CCTV camera.

I’ve been really impressed by this home monitory system. The security cameras take great quality images and have sensitive microphones so you can see and hear what is going on. Ideally you want to use a WiFi connection but it seems to work very well over 3G and 4G.

The smart plug performed exactly as promised. In future I will use it to turn lights on and off to give the impression we are at home.

I hadn’t used anything like this before but I’m glad I’ve had the introduction. It certainly gave me peace of mind while I was away from the house last weekend and it performs brilliantly.

The Panasonic KX-HN6012 Home Monitoring and Control Kit is available direct from Panasonic and also from John Lewis. Expect to pay around £229 (plus an additional £99.99 for the external camera).

Disclosure: I was provided with a Panasonic KX-HN6012 Home Monitoring and Control Kit for review purposes. Thoughts and opinions entirely my own.

This sounds very impressive and the picture quality is considerably better than I’d have expected, too. As you say, peace of mind and a huge array of features.

It boasts a massive array of features. I just keep finding more. It does provide peace of mind and the audio quality is as good as the picture quality. Very odd to hear what is going on at your family home when you are miles away!

I’m impressed by the quality of the pictures. Usually they look like a pair of tights has been stretched over the lens! It seems a good price for the kit you’re getting.

Ha ha, yes I know what you mean about poor picture quality with other systems. I think that’s one of the strongest selling points of this particular kit and the night vision is superb. Well worth considering if you’re thinking of investing in this type of equipment.

Good review – I’m reviewing this at the moment too and am really impressed. Love the fact that you can control it all from your smartphone – I’ve never been so excited as to turn the light on and off with the smart plug! Very jealous that you’ve got to try out the outdoor camera too.

It’s a marvellous system isn’t it Dave? The smart plug is great. May use it to control the slow cooker!

Thanks for your reviews, very helpful. I am thinking of purchasing this, but I am not that tech savvy and have 2 quick questions.

    1. Does it record footage that can be watched at a later date? Does this record onto an SD card? How much footage would I likely get before I had to change/wipe the SD card?

    2. Can I view the camera when I am away and on a different wifi network? (do you have to be on the same wifi network to access the camera?

    Thanks in advance

In answer to your question; 1) You can configure the system to start recording when it picks up a strange noise or movement etc, yes. Yes, it records onto an SD card. How much footage would you get on a card? No idea – I havn’t tested that.

      2) Can you view the camera over a different WiFi network? Yes you can.
