I unlocked the padlock, swung-open the metal door and peered into the poorly-lit storage unit. My heart immediately sank when I saw what was in there. The first thing to catch my eye among the carefully stacked boxes was a plastic shopping basket filled with the most random selection of items ever collected in one small space. There was an ancient tin of shaving foam, two bow ties, a pair of thick woolen socks I’d never worn, some old letters and, bizarrest of all, a Wendy and Lisa LP.
Over the past few months, I’ve seen numerous comments on social media from people preparing for significant birthdays. I’ve also seen a few “30 / 40 / 50 things to do before you’re 30 / 40 / 50 (delete as applicable) type articles.
Following half-term, I hoped this week would be reasonably quiet and that the family would return to its usual routine. This turned out to be a massively naive wish as I instead found myself receiving a crash course in emergency dental treatment.
Don’t tell my eldest daughter Helen, but I don’t like JoJo Bows. This puts me in an awkward position because Helen is something of a fan.
