I have a troubled history with maths. I didn’t do well in the subject at school and it’s bugged me my entire adult life. When I appeared on the @vicderbyshire show back in 2018, I said I would like to resit GCSE maths. It’s taken me a while, but my plan, with help from online tutoring service @pitutor is to sit the exam this November. Bizarrely, the Coronavirus school closures have a part to play in this. I’ve seen how well my kids have got on with online learning and they’ve had weekly French lessons via Zoom with a neighbour who teaches the subject. They have got on so well with online learning I thought I’d hire an online tutor myself. I’m four lessons in and learned the basics of calculating areas, algebra, long multiplication and multiplying and dividing fractions. Basic stuff for any primary school kid, but quite technical for me and (...let’s be honest) many adults. I’m really looking forward to sitting the exam again. As well as hopefully getting a better grade, it’ll be really useful to sit a modern GCSE as my eldest child, Helen, starts secondary school this September. It’ll be good to get first hand experience of the new grading system and the expectations placed on pupils years and years after I sat GCSEs first time around. Here is my #LastNormalPhoto It’s a long exposure image taken from an outside deck of the @nationaltheatre in Central #London on 5 March (the tallest building to the right of the frame is St Paul’s Cathedral). If you aren’t familiar with the ‘last normal photo’ it’s a BBC thing. The idea is that you post the last photo on your phone before lockdown.
I confess I have bent the rules. This was one of the last images I took on my DSLR camera, not my phone.
It’s funny looking back on this. I travelled to the event by train, only saw one person wearing a face mask and had been to an event attended by about 100 people and we were all sat next to each other. Can you imagine doing that now?

Remember all the fuss when the lockdown started and you couldn’t buy toilet rolls anywhere? Well, what better way to demonstrate social distancing than with toilet rolls!

To put this picture in perspective, one toilet roll is 11 centimetres long so 18 of them make two metres (well, 1m98cm but have you ever seen a two-centimetre toilet roll for sale anywhere?). Two metres is longer than most people realise but I thought this would be an amusing way to show how far apart we should all be.

I took this fun pic in support of the @IFRC #SpreadFactsNotFear campaign. The aim on this occasion is to promote the importance of social distancing and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

The illness is spread by small droplets when someone speaks, coughs or sneezes. If we all stay 2 metres apart, it makes it much more difficult for the illness to spread (although do check Government guidelines in the country where you reside). Do you find it difficult to estimate how far two metres is when you are out and about? Do you think most people adhere to the guidance? <ad> Skating my way to fitness with a pair of @microskaters MT Plus in-line skates (not that I’d usually wear a suit while skating but it made for a better picture!) Anyway, in the latest of my posts focused on ways to stay active while social distancing, I try out Microskaters’ MT Plus in-line skates.

The wheels had amazing free movement and performed well with everything I throw at them (going forwards, backwards, lemons, t-stops, going at speed etc.). They also had some great features such as a ratchet on one of the buckles for tightening and ‘bumpers’ on the sides. While this will divide opinion, I did feel they’d have benefitted from having a heel brake (although one will soon be available to buy as an add-on accessory). More on the blog (link in bio). .
