{{AD}} Here’s Izzy reading the label of a tin of soup.

It’s a quirky pastime of hers. She quite often reads the labels and asks me about the difference between salts and sugars or calories and saturated fats!

Doing that in an age appropriate way is sometimes a challenge. It can be tough for Izzy to understand yet many adults seem to struggle with interpreting food labelling.

If you are interested in family nutrition and want to influence the claims made on food packaging, go take a look on my blog and take part in the ‘Health Claims Unpacked’ research project. You’ll find a post highlighted at the top of the homepage.

It’s a really simple, fun set of online activities that you have to complete. It takes about 15 minutes and your responses will by used to issue guidance to food producers and regulators.

I did it and actually learned something about did labelling and nutrition!

Quick side note: The project is funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology and led by Prof. Rodney Jones at the @uniofreading.

Pregnancy and birth during lockdown...

Allow me to introduce you to Phil Norris. Phil’s wife gave birth to the couple’s second child in September so she was pregnant throughout the first wave of the Coronavirus pandemic.

To quote Phil, Frederick, the couple’s newborn is an “uncelebrated baby” because lockdown restrictions mean the family has been unable to welcome guests into their home or get out and about.

Childcare for the couple’s two year old has also presented challenges and Phil was unable to attend antenatal appointments.

Go have a read / listen for yourself. While it’s not been the easiest time for Phil and his family, his outlook has been very positive and he has a great message for any other mums and dads who are expecting a #lockdownbaby.

Not that I’m pretentious or anything, but I call this: “Newly bought Christmas tree on roof rack, in awe of the setting sun.”

We wouldn’t normally decorate until December but it’s 2020 so normal rules don’t apply.

Domestic abuse: Where to get help.

Calls to domestic abuse helplines increased during the first lockdown. Christmas can be another stressful time for those living with an abuser and with lockdown restrictions inevitably going to be in place this holiday season, things could be especially stressful.

The Government’s #YouAreNotAlone campaign aims to raise awareness of the fact help is out there from a variety of sources for anyone experiencing abuse (...in the many forms it comes and the many different individuals it affects). The campaign’s symbol is a ♥️, hence the pic.

If you need help yourself or know someone that does, here’s how / where you can get assistance.

1) If in immediate danger call 999. If you can’t speak and are calling from a mobile, listen to the operator and dial 55 when prompted. You’ll be connected to the police.

2) @nspcc_official is available for anyone who has concerns about a child’s welfare.

3) @refugecharity operates the National Domestic Abuse Helpline for women and children facing abuse.

4) @galopuk runs a specialist helpline for anyone from the #LGBT community facing abuse.

5) @respect_uk runs the Men’s Advice Line for male victims of domestic abuse.

6) @knfmhbv Karma Nirvana has a national helpline for individuals affected by honour-based abuse.

7) @staysafeeast offers help to disabled individuals who experience abuse.

8) @signhealth provides support to deaf people who live with abuse.

9) You can also find support at gov.uk/domestic-abuse (you’ll need to copy and paste into your browser).

Remember, don’t judge those who tolerate life in an abusive household. You don’t know their story. Listen and offer help if you can and if you can’t, signpost them to one of the organisations above.

Flexibility & flexible working...

You may have seen that @zurichinsurance has taken part in a study backed by @geogovuk

For one year, all job vacancies were advertised with the following six words included in each advert:

“Part-time, flexible hours, job share”

The result? A 33% increase in women being recruited to senior managerial roles.

This is to be celebrated. But...there’s a bigger success here, one that’s not been so widely reported.

Not only did more women get recruited to senior roles, but there was a surge in applications from both women AND men. Flexible working, it seems, is a way to attract the best talent.

Better still, @zurich_uk now employs male and female senior managers who are setting a good example to their staff. Everyone knows that senior managers have been employed on these terms so middle managers and operational staff know that flexible working is part of Zurich’s working culture. Senior managers are acting as positive role models and this, I think, is what really needs to be celebrated about Zurich’s approach. It’s setting an example to other employers.
