Playing with lighting and a fast shutter speed

There are two elements of photography I have rarely experimented with: Lighting and a fast shutter speed. This week I combined the two to take this image of coloured water splashing out of a glass. By my own admission, it is a little rough and ready, but I don’t think it’s too bad for a first attempt.

A syringe filled with blue food colouring is fired into a Champagne flute full of water. Taking this image was only possible using a fast shutter speed.

Enjoying the colours of autumn

This is one of those blog posts that nearly didn’t happen. I was uncertain about posting this image on the blog but Mrs Adams persuaded me otherwise. She said it featured a beautiful mix of autumn colours and that I should share it. On reflection, I decided she was correct and so here it is!

I hope you’ll agree this photograph features some beautiful autumn colours. That’s certainly what my wife thought.

A colourful find at Emmetts Garden

Earlier this week I decided to venture out into the wind and rain and take some pictures. It was a challenge to see what I could find to photograph in these horrible conditions and so after the school run one morning, I ventured off to Emmetts Garden, a hillside garden managed by the National Trust in Kent.

Despite the rain and wind, and the fact most of its peers had died back, this plant was continuing to flower. It was a noticeable dash of colour among the other plants.

A woodland scene

In a scene replicated in many households during half-term, granny came to visit. During her all-too brief stay, we went out and visited Leith Hill, a National Trust site near Dorking in Surrey.

Sometimes simple scenes make for the best photographs. This woodland scene, for instance, really appealed to me.

A Surrey landscape: Same photograph, four different edits

Earlier this week I travelled into London to attend the Internet Marketing Show. Unfortunately the early stage of my journey was beset with problems and I found myself unexpectedly stranded at a very rural train station surrounded by the glorious Surrey landscape with 30 minutes to kill until the next train.

What looked like a natural, tranquil landscape became very dramatic when converted to black and white.
