I have a troubled history with maths. I didn’t do well in the subject at school and it’s bugged me my entire adult life. When I appeared on the @vicderbyshire show back in 2018, I said I would like to resit GCSE maths. It’s taken me a while, but my plan, with help from online tutoring service @pitutor is to sit the exam this November. Bizarrely, the Coronavirus school closures have a part to play in this. I’ve seen how well my kids have got on with online learning and they’ve had weekly French lessons via Zoom with a neighbour who teaches the subject. They have got on so well with online learning I thought I’d hire an online tutor myself. I’m four lessons in and learned the basics of calculating areas, algebra, long multiplication and multiplying and dividing fractions. Basic stuff for any primary school kid, but quite technical for me and (...let’s be honest) many adults. I’m really looking forward to sitting the exam again. As well as hopefully getting a better grade, it’ll be really useful to sit a modern GCSE as my eldest child, Helen, starts secondary school this September. It’ll be good to get first hand experience of the new grading system and the expectations placed on pupils years and years after I sat GCSEs first time around.
