*Controversial idea klaxon!!!*

Trainers...tracksuit bottoms...hoodies...zip-up tops. Are these not better clothes for our kids to wear to school? To comply with COVID-19 guidance, schools are insisting children wear their PE kit (sportswear) twice a week instead of the usual uniform and I think this is brilliant.

Traditional school uniform is Dickensian. It’s uncomfortable and prevents children, especially girls, from rougher play and exploring the outside world.

Hopefully we’re all going to get used to children wearing activewear to school. It can be one colour and branded, just like traditional uniform, but it’d be practical, comfortable and, well, modern.

I try to live an environmentally friendly lifestyle and encourage my children to do the same. Like many families, we crowded round the TV to watch David Attenborough’s documentary ‘A Life on Our Planet’ and it inspired me to change our shopping habits.

For some time I’d been meaning to switch away from harsh, chemical household cleaners that are sold in single use bottles. I then discovered @cleanlivingint which produces environmentally friendly cleaning agents in concentrated formulas that you dilute at home and pour into re-usable bottles.

I’ve made good use of these cleaning products and they have cleaned everything I have thrown at them.

Party bags: What is the point of them?

Got to be honest, I’m not a fan. Of course COVID means we haven’t hosted or been to any parties in a while but party bags just seem so...unnecessary.

Did you get given them when you were a kid? I think they’re a bit like ‘wrap around childcare’ and ‘after school clubs’ and didn’t exist before the 21st Century.

That’s before we get on to the huge amounts of plastic tat and unhealthy food that seems to be included in most bags (or gendered party bags, seen a few of them over the years!).

I do understand it’s an attempt to be nice to guests, but I reckon we should do away with them.

A book to help time-poor working parents...and it’s been written in a gender neutral way!

I’ve been reading @anitacleare’s ‘The Work/Parent Switch.’ It’s honest about modern parenting, brutally so in places. I’m sure most mums and dads could read it and recognise some of their own behaviour in it.

Do you, for instance, find family time is interrupted by digital devices? Do you find yourself constantly rushing between activity and after school clubs? Do you force parenting into small ‘pockets’ of time?

Cleare accepts all this and offers action points to help you deal with them. You’ll find more detail on the blog (link in bio).

Do you recognise the behaviours outlined above? If so, do you feel guilty about it or do you take action to try and amend your behaviour so you’re a more relaxed parent?
