Q&A with Jonathan Aspinwall: A part-time, job sharing, adoptive dad!

I recently wrote a blog post highlighting that very few senior managers from the world of business are taking shared parental leave (SPL). While writing and researching that blog post, I was asked if I was interested in a case study involving a senior manager from the BBC who instead went on adoption leave after he and his husband adopted two children.

An unexpected benefit of Shared Parental Leave

Shared Parental Leave is a funny old thing (SPL). When it was introduced, I had high hopes new dads and mums would instantly see the benefits and leap at the opportunity to spend time with their offspring following the arrival of a baby. It quickly became clear the introduction of SPL in the UK was going to be evolutionary, not revolutionary.

Take up of Shared Parental Leave could be better, but has it led to more discussion and a positive shift in attitudes towards fatherhood?

Neos Smartcam review: A cost-effective way to improve home security?

Some months ago, we recruited a cat sitter to look after the family pet when we went to visit family in Scotland. I told her not to be alarmed, but that we had a smartcam in the house. She remarked that every house she went to these days was equipped with them and she was often told not to worry about them. She wasn’t be spied on, they were there simply there to deter and catch any burglars!

A rainbow rose to mark Valentine’s Day

I confess I don’t generally make a big thing of Valentine’s Day. There was, however, no escape when I went shopping with my daughters Helen and Izzy a couple of days ago. They saw this rainbow rose in among the Valentine’s bouquets and they insisted I buy it.

I don’t tend to ‘go large’ on Valentine’s Day, but I felt this picture of a rainbow rose was worth sharing to mark the occasion.

Brighton’s West Pier: One photo, two edits

This week has been all about photography. In addition to attending the Bedrooms Of London photography exhibition, I spent a day in Brighton with Darren Coleshill of the Photalife blog. Together we strolled around the Marina, sea font and city centre with our cameras. It was during our time together I took this image of what remains of Brighton’s iconic West Pier, which was destroyed by fire in 2003.
