Over the past couple of months I’ve been test-driving a number of children’s books published by the Random House Group. Outlined below are a few of the titles that have been well received in this Household.

Dandylion by Lizzie Finlay

Dandylion by Lizzie Finlay – With our eldest daughter about to start school we’ve casually been reading her a few books set in school. This particular title is about the only lion that attends this one particular school. I won’t give too much away, suffice it to say he doesn’t fit in and eventually has to leave. Don’t be put off though, it has a very happy ending! One of the nicest things about this book are the illustrations. A great bedtime read. Cost: £5.99

Just Imagine and You Choose, both by Nick Sharratt and Pippa Goodhart – These are without doubt the most popular books we’ve read to our eldest daughter. Both books follow a similar format. On each page a question is posed, such as; “When you got hungry, what would you eat?” Each question is accompanied by a series of pictures and the child can discuss and chose what they like. In the case of the food question there are cakes, fruits, vegetables and so on. We’ve been asked to read these books time and again. They just capture the youngster’s imagination which is great. I’m planning to get a few more from this range of titles. Cost £5.99 each.

Alfie’s Alphabet and Alfie’s Numbers by Shirley Hughes – As the names of these two books suggest, they are designed to help children learn their A-Z or how to count. There’s nothing radical about the concept, each page will either feature a letter or a number related to the corresponding text. They’re part of a bigger range of books featuring the Alfie character and feature delightful illustrations. Cost: £5.99 each.
