Do your children ever make you feel stupid?

“No daddy, that’s not how you do it,” said Helen as she pressed ahead with her mathematics homework.

Giving your school-aged children some freedom

Despite the advent of podcasts, blogs and other forms of digital media, radio is still a great place for holding live discussions and debate. Just yesterday I was involved in a very interesting discussion on Radio 5 Live about how much freedom you should give your school-aged children. The result was rather like what’s happening in Parliament with Brexit: There was very little consensus whatsoever between the three of us who were chatting about the issue.

Dad Skills: Things I have had to learn as a dad

When I became a father I knew I would be on a steep learning curve. I would be learning about breastfeeding, baby nutrition and what it was like to live without sleep. As time went on, I picked up various other dad skills.

Snow day disarray

What is it about snow days that lead to Total Domestic Disarray (TDD)? It could just be my household, but a sudden school closure and loss of routine for a couple of days results in domestic chaos so severe it cannot be measured.

School dinners: Things ain’t what they used to be, thankfully.

Having just ordered some food in a cafe, my mind began to wonder. The food in this place wasn’t the best quality and it reminded me of school dinners, an element of life that has changed beyond all recognition since I was kid.

Treat with caution! This bio-hazard is known as luncheon meat. It was a staple of my diet when I had school dinners. Thankfully, my kids have never heard of the stuff or eaten it.
