Simba Hybrid mattress: A good night’s sleep?

My phone rang. It was a number I didn’t recognise but I took the call anyway. “Hello sir, this is your AO delivery driver, we’ll be with you in about 11 minutes.” This was the moment Mrs Adams and I had been waiting for: Our new Simba hybrid mattress was about to arrive!

Introducing the Simba Hybrid mattress.

While exciting, this also led to a stress-filled few minutes. I was still in my dressing gown, our car was on the driveway which would make it difficult for the delivery truck to drop off the mattress. Additionally, the old mattress was still on our bed. It was going to be a challenge to get ready in time, but we managed it with a couple of minutes to spare.

When the Simba Hybrid mattress arrived it was in a rectangular box, roughly one metre in height and 50 centimetres wide and deep. I was pleased to see this as it would make getting the mattress up the stairs an into our room considerably easier.

We have a small landing at the top of the stairs so there’s little space to move something as large as a mattress. I’d had to inform our youngest daughter we might need to invade her bedroom to help with navigating the new mattress in to our room. This wasn’t necessary because the box was small enough to be carried straight it and at 33 kilograms, it wasn’t too heavy either. Added to that, the wonderful delivery drivers took it upstairs for us relieving even more of the stress.

This is where the fun began. The Simba Hybrid is a mix of titanium-alloy coils, foam and a rather wonderful sounding substance infused with graphite called Simbatex (apparently Simbatex is a specially designed foam and the graphite helps regulate body temperature as you sleep). In total there are six layers to this mattress and it should be 25 centimetres deep.

You can’t fit a double mattress that size into a box that small without doing something special. It was very impressively shrink and vacuum wrapped. Once Mrs Adams and I got the mattress out of the box (be advised this is a two-person job) I carefully cut along a clearly marked seam to unleash the mattress.

Almost immediately there was a hissing sound, like a punctured car trye deflating. The last time I had to open up a shrink-wrapped mattress, the product in question practically leapt out the packaging and almost knocked me to the floor. To ensure this didn’t happen again, Mrs Adams and I quickly manoeuvred the mattress on to the bed and stood back waiting for it to increase in size exponentially.

The carefully marked seam you must cut along. The mattress gently inflated, there was no “big bang”

It wasn’t to be. There was no explosive mattress unleashing on this occasion. The mattress just slowly inflated. Apparently, it can take up to 48 hours to inflate to full size although it seemed to be perfectly ready to use after a few hours.

What you want to know is what the mattress is like to sleep on. The mattress is described as “medium to firm” and I would agree with that statement. The top of it seems a little on the soft side but once you put your weight on it, you realise it is very firm.

On the first night, I noticed a very feint ‘new mattress’ odour. I am not, however, concerned by this. I am sure it will pass over time and it was not enough to disturb what was a very good night’s sleep.

Overall, I found the mattress to be very comfortable and supportive. This is important to me as I pulled some muscles in back a couple of months ago. I wanted something that was going to support my back as I relaxed and slept.

I asked Mrs Adams for her opinion. She said: “I genuinely love it. It’s very comfortable and felt bigger than the previous mattress. It’s obviously good for the back and I’m really pleased with it.”

While 100% foam mattresses are, in my opinion, rigid and good for the back, I have heard complaints from people about them being too hot to sleep on in summer. I would agree with this. Needless to say, we’re in the early stages of a British autumn so I can’t really comment on how the Simba Hybrid will perform in the summer months, but I have high hopes. Conversely, however, we are going through a bit of a cold snap and I haven’t felt cold at night.

A frequent problem with our previous mattress was the fitted sheet always coming loose at the corners. I think the Simba Hybrid is slightly thinner, so I am hoping this won’t be a problem, although at the time of writing, we hadn’t had the mattress long enough to say for certain (although no problems so far).

If you are looking for a new mattress, the Simba Hybrid is, in my opinion, comfortable, designed with to be supportive and not retain body heat. It is also easy to deliver and you can pay a fee to have your old mattress taken away and recycled.

The Simba Hybrid would normally cost £899. At the time of writing, it was selling at a discounted price of £746.17. I will finish by saying an investment in a good mattress is an investment in both a good night’s sleep and also your health.
