Finding the perfect gift is somewhat of an art. It requires a certain amount of creative thinking, and even then, a lot of people will struggle to get it just right. Thankfully, there are some basic tactics that you can keep in mind that make the process a lot easier. Whether you’re buying something for your partner of twenty years or your favourite colleague at your new job, here’s how you can find the perfect gift for any occasion.
Think about the recipient
Before you actually start your search for a gift, it’s important to take some time to think about the recipient. There isn’t really such a thing as a one-size-fits-all gift, what makes a gift perfect is the amount that it reflects your relationship with the person you’re giving it to.
Try to think about if there’s anything they’ve said they need or want recently. Failing that, go over their favourite pastimes and hobbies, or think about activities or events they’ve enjoyed in the past and might want to get back into.
Where to look
Once you’ve thought a little bit about the recipient and their taste, you can start thinking about where would be best to look for their gift.
Gift sets
If you’re looking for a surefire way to get a gift that hits the mark, then it’s definitely worth taking a look at gift sets. Depending on the recipient, you could get something that they’ll use in their everyday lives like shaving gift sets, or something a bit more out there like a wood carving set. The lovely thing about receiving these kinds of presents is that it often feels like receiving multiple gifts, adding just a bit more joy to the experience.
Local artisans
If you live in an area with any local markets or shops that sell wares made by locals, then you’ll likely be able to find a unique and thoughtful gift there. Try to see if there are any jewellers or potters in the neighbourhood, or even clothes makers or knitters.
If you find someone who makes something that might suit your recipient, you can reach out and ask if they do custom orders – it’s a great way to buy a gift that really captures some of the thought that you’ve put into the process.
Online makers
If you can’t find any local artisans selling their creations in your neighbourhood, then it’s worth taking a look online at stores like Etsy. You’ll find heaps of people who make lovely items, many of which could make the perfect gift. It’s lovely to support people just starting their creative journey, and the gift will likely also feel a lot more personal and from the heart.
If you’re starting to stress out over finding the perfect gift, try not to. What matters is that you’ve put some thought into the buying process – if you’ve read this article, then you’re already on the right track. By keeping the recipient’s taste in mind throughout the process, you should be able to get something that highlights just how much you care about them.
