As a home worker, you may already have a dedicated space or indeed a small room within your existing home, where you undertake your day to day business activities. You may often find that despite being in this dedicated working space, it can be all too tempting to succumb to some of the distractions in your surrounding environment – unexpected visitors, housework etc or perhaps on the flipside, you find that you are distracted by work when should be enjoying a relaxing evening with the family, purely because your laptop keeps calling out to you…
This is a problem experienced by many home workers and especially when the space is not separate from the living area of the home. Whilst you may be somewhat focused and get the essentials done, could you be even more productive and what would need to happen for you to achieve this?
It can be easy to think that the only solution is spending a fortune on a new extension or rented offices. However, there are some affordable options and actions you can take to improve your home working space and create clearer boundaries between your work and home life.
After all, there are of course many benefits of working from home, including the all-important flexibility element, not to mention the zero-cost commute from your bedroom to your office room! So, before you settle for what you’ve got, consider some of these low cost office space solutions that may be just what you have been hoping for.
Create Clear Boundaries
Setting some boundaries around your work and life can really make a huge difference to your productivity, not to mention your stress levels! These may be boundaries that you set with yourself and with others. As an example – not working after a certain time / at the weekend or scheduling time to do the housework as an active break from your work.
If you are amongst those who do not have a dedicated office room within your home, you might want to consider joining the many home workers out there who have set up their own home office in their own garden! Getting your own garden office cabin is both affordable and easy to arrange and provides the perfect solution to ensuring you can keep your work and home life physically separate and productive.
Whilst this may be a restricted option during the colder months, as a seasonal solution, create a portable office in your garden or nearest green space. By utilising your outside space, you can benefit from the physical barrier and of course the many benefits of being surrounded by nature, which itself can increase productivity amongst other things. Why would you want to go inside to do the dishes when the sun is shining and the birds are singing?!
Sometimes, distractions are out of your control and can be too much and it could be that the best option is to vary your work space in response to your business demands. For example, heading out to the peace and quiet of your local library when you have an important or time pressing task to complete, could offer the perfect answer.
Clean and Tidy
You may be thinking that cleaning is one of the very things that distracts you from your important work tasks, which may very well be the case. However, it can be overlooked that when you have a less than tidy work desk or area, it is more likely for you to want to escape and why some individuals look for and succumb to all and every distraction around them – to get away from the chaos that is their desk! Being organised and keeping your desk and paperwork in good order will help avoid this from being a potential problem for you.
As with the above, if your existing office space is not comfortable or relaxing, you may well look for opportunities to escape. Investing in a comfortable chair, positioning your screen and keyboard in the optimal position or changing the décor surrounding you, can all do wonders for your comfort.
