On Friday I was out walking with Toddler Adams in the glorious sunshine. Correction; I was walking, she was in her pushchair having sprained her ankle while falling off a ride-on toy at nursery.
We were strolling past a field that had recently been cut for silage. This one particular poppy was right at the edge of the cut grass. If you look closely you’ll see all the grass in the background is crushed down and broken. A couple of centimetres further to the left and this gorgeous plant would probably be in a bale of straw by now.
As daft as it sounds, I thought this plant had a very lucky escape. It was like it was the sole survivor in some kind of dreadful massacre.
I took two pictures in quick succession. In the first one the bee flew into the frame. In the second, the bee had landed on the poppy and the blade of flowering grass was caught in a breeze and blown into the shot. I thought the purple of the grass mixed well with the red of the poppy. The presence of the bee just shows nature in action.
The image was taken from a distance of about two metres in close-up mode. Other than that, it hasn’t been edited at all.
May I also take this opportunity to wish all you a happy Father’s Day. I hope it’s as sunny as the rest of the week has been.
I have linked this image up to the MySundayPhoto linky on the magnificent OneDad3Girls blog. Do take some time to visit and check out the splendid photography for yourself.

Beautiful photo. You did very well to capture the bee – they never stay still for long enough for me to get a decent picture of them.
My favourite flower and has so much meaning to me! I even named my daughter after it! And lucky to catch the bee inside too x
And to think poppies are a symbol for the fallen in the Great War. How very apt that this one should have survived.
such a shame we don’t respect flowers more, we had a huge poppy field here last year, not sure what’s in it this year, the bees rely on the flowers and without the bees…..
This is amazing! One bee is hard enough to capture and you got 2! #mysundayphoto
Ah the chosen one. Love the detail on both the bee and flower
Thank you for linking up
Well done for catching such a beautiful image xx
Fantastic shot John,
I’m so glad the poppy survived. Its a thing of beauty plus with two bees inside…a spectacular sight. Thanks for sharing 😉
Happy Fathers Day to you
I love poppies, and cute little bumble bee you’ve captured on film there too.
